“Counter-Terrorism: Intelligence  & Social Network Analysis – Above CNN, But Below “Classified”
The operational success of al Qaeda’s strategy, facilitated by its organizational structure is as impressive as it is frightening. They have leveraged associative networks, supported by social bonds which predated ideological commitment. It is these networks that continue to inspire alienated, young Muslims to join the jihad – in the Middle East as well as Middle America. Committed to a common vision, they share values regarding who they are, what they do, and how they do it. The tight bonds of family and friendship, paradoxically enhanced by the tenuous links between the terrorist cells, have contributed to al Qaeda’s innovation, flexibility and longevity. Thus, our ability to gather intelligence, in the form of social network analysis, is the logical response to understanding, identifying and defeating terrorist cells, which working in small, independent cells enhance their operational security and reduce the problem of delegation of responsibilities from leaders to subordinates. The connectivity between people and events you thought you understood will prove to be educational and astonishing.
